ABOUT NOURISHING NARRATIVES
The Mosaic Film Experience is collaborating with Newman’s Own Foundation to create this unique and exciting mobile film challenge.
WHAT IS NOURISHING NARRATIVES?
Nourishing Narratives challenges today’s youth to share their perspectives on food justice through creative storytelling. Films can explore innovative solutions, showcase the impact of organizations and individuals, or reimagine what a just, equitable, and fair food system for all looks like. Through film, together we will celebrate the joy and the power of food.
WHY PARTICIPATE?
As a partner this gives your organization an opportunity to connect with students in a real way and can encourage stories of your organization to be told in creative and aspirational ways.
As an educator this competition can help students learn exceptional hands on learning skills like creativity, collaboration and critical thinking skills for career preparedness.
As a parent/guardian your goal is to help expand storytelling skills that are vital to tomorrow's creative careers. The ways you can help your child are to guide them through the process as only you can. Parents/guardians need to fill out a consent form and finalize the entry process on FilmFreeway.
ELIGIBILITY
Participants will craft and share their unique stories, into up to 3 minute films. Films should explore the filmmaker’s perspectives on Food Justice and offer innovative solutions, and/or what it would take to create a just, equitable, and fair food system for all. Storytelling, creativity and originality are the key elements to making an impactful winning film. We’ll also be looking at the use of the three required elements, how the film connects to the theme of food justice and technical execution.

WHAT IS FOOD JUSTICE?
A just food system is one that is fair, ethical, humane and equitable for all. It represents the belief that healthy and nutritious food is a fundamental human right.
Achieving food justice requires addressing the status quo, one filled with systemic barriers–such as lack of access and transportation to healthy foods, limited nutrition education, poverty, and other obstacles that prevent this ideal from materializing. These big, complex, and sometimes daunting issues are all interconnected and so too must our efforts and the solution be.

WHY A YOUTH FILM PROJECT?
This unique contest will celebrate the voices and narratives of youth from all backgrounds and skill levels ages 10 to 18. Young filmmakers are invited to share their stories on the challenges and solutions related to food justice using their mobile devices. Our goal is to create a program that supports, connects, and amplifies youth voices and creativity as a force for social impact.
WHY MOBILE?
Mosaic Mobile shows students they can use tools they may already have to tell original and impactful stories; using storytelling skills powered by digital technology but driven by human creativity. This innovative approach levels the creative playing field across barriers created by economic status, race, gender, disability, or geographic location by putting the power of creativity in any student’s hands.
ABOUT THE PRIZE
